The second volume of David Ratté's Toxic Planet series doubles down on its darkly comic vision of ecological ruin, subtitled Espèce Menacée — "Endangered Species." The cover says it all: two kids in gas masks, dressed for a casual summer day, stand hand-in-hand amid a flooded, trash-strewn wasteland of murky water, discarded containers, and drifting debris, their easy body language a perfect deadpan contrast to the toxic world around them. Published by Editions Paquet in 2007, this French-language bande dessinée balances genuine environmental unease with a wry, offbeat charm that's hard to resist.
