Joyce Farmer's Sorties de secours (Delcourt, 2016) is a deeply human graphic novel whose restrained, elegant cover says a great deal with very little: two intimate portrait medallions — an older man in glasses and an older woman in glasses — framed in green against a quiet, dignified design. R. Crumb's endorsement graces the back, calling it one of the finest graphic novels he has ever read, and it's easy to see from the cover's tender, unadorned linework why this work resonates so personally and so powerfully.
