A military unit conducting a raid retrieves a jeep abandoned by retreating Germans and discovers a bag of rice, which they mistake for stolen gold. When a French Navy officer named Lejeune arrives seeking to locate lost gold from a riverbed using a radar set, the soldiers believe he is confirming their find. Using deception, the soldiers employ the rice as bait in a trap, leading Lejeune to suspect he is being tested by the F.B.I. due to suspicions about his loyalty. The narrator, a STAR-PRESS reporter, eventually learns the truth and helps expose Lejeune as a potential spy rather than a genuine French officer.
