The cover parades an entertaining cast of historical figures labeled across the centuries of conflict, from Carmania 1914 to Mad Jack Churchill 1940–1944, anchored front and center by a barrel-chested, barefoot sailor in blue clutching a flagpole draped with a tricolor, flanked by a WWI biplane, a seagull, a soldier in a helmet, a smiling woman officer, a figure holding what appears to be a bat, and a tough-looking man gripping a very large knife and a sword. It's a wonderfully absurd ensemble that makes a compelling case for 2021's most entertaining dive into the stranger corners of military history.
