Forty Years with Mister Oswald #[nn]

“Famous Last Words”

In "Famous Last Words," Mister Oswald faces a pivotal moment as he nears the sale of Miss Turmyte’s building for $25,000—only to hit a wall when Mr. Van Note refuses to back the deal, urging him instead to build a new store beyond the city limits. As he tours distant plots and weighs the isolation of a new location, the weight of his decision settles in, leaving him visibly shaken upon returning to his familiar office. Written and illustrated entirely by Russ Johnson, this 1968 issue captures a quiet, introspective turn in the series, with Johnson’s distinctive art and storytelling bringing depth to a moment of uncertainty. The cover, also by Johnson, mirrors the story’s mood with a striking, contemplative image.

Miss Turmyte finally agrees to sell the building to Mister Oswald for $25,000. However, Mister Oswald is unable to secure a loan from Mr. Van Note, who instead recommends building a new store outside the city limits, rather than spending an additional $25,000 in repairs at the old location. Exploring his options, Mister Oswald takes a trip to explore potential plots of land and discovers that while there is indeed space to build, his new store would be far away from his customer base. Upon his return to his office in the hardware store, he is visibly upset and frustrated over his prospects.
