Dotty finds herself caught in romantic complications when Don, a man she loves, asks her to use an assumed identity to impress his mother by posing as Jean Martin, a wealthy Virginia debutante. On a train journey, Dotty meets Clark, a dramatic critic who becomes interested in her, while she attempts to maintain her false persona and romantic pursuits. Further entanglement ensues when Van Carlton, a wealthy real estate magnate, enters the picture and complicates matters as Dotty navigates multiple suitors and her fabricated identity.
