The Death of the Silver Surfer miniseries was announced in February 2025 and openly timed by Marvel to align with the MCU's theatrical introduction of a Silver Surfer — Shalla-Bal rather than Norrin Radd — in The Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25, 2025). Writer Greg Pak, whose prior Marvel credentials include the celebrated Planet Hulk and Star Wars: Darth Vader runs, was paired with artist Sumit Kumar, known for Web of Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood; series editor Thomas Groneman oversaw the project under editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski. Pak described the series in interviews as a deliberate engagement with the Silver Surfer's core emotional contradictions — an alien attacked wherever he goes who nonetheless always chooses to help — framing the story as relevant to present-day real-world anxieties about xenophobia and institutional power.
