The cover is a feast for the eye: Holmes's silhouetted profile forms an architectural archway above a Victorian London roofscape, and within that mind's-eye chamber a lone deerstalker-capped figure brandishes a revolver amid swirling mist and glowing paper lanterns hanging from a grand theatre interior — a smoking pipe jutting from the silhouette like a chimney, a Union Jack fluttering below. It's a wonderfully inventive design that promises a mystery lived as much from the inside out as from the streets of London themselves.
