French comics publisher Soleil delivered a gleefully irreverent fantasy parody in 2012 with Débilbo le Hoplite #1, created by Sala, Rudowski, and Lenoble. The cover sets the comedic tone perfectly: a wide-eyed hobbit-like hero crouches in the foreground clutching something small, flanked by a gruff, axe-wielding dwarf, a mischievous blue goblin, and a towering wizard leaning on a glowing green staff — the whole motley crew packed into a rocky underground passage. With its badge proudly declaring "une parodie inattendue," this is clearly a tongue-in-cheek romp through familiar fantasy territory, rendered in a wonderfully expressive cartoon style.
