Martin's novel — and the cover says it all: a beaming Karen stands center stage with hands raised, while two unimpressed friends flank her, each clutching a very skeptical cat (a fluffy white one and a sleek gray one), with a lounging orange tabby at her feet looking equally unconvinced. It's a perfectly expressive snapshot of childhood club-founding enthusiasm meeting a slightly less enthusiastic audience.
