Again, also, “ See that I am, and there is no God besides me.” These things, therefore, Moses says, con- tending that there is only one God. But they, also, perhaps will say, neither do we assert that there are two or three gods, I, however, will show that they do assert this, adducing the tes- timony of John, who says, “In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God.” You see that he is said to be with God. But whether this is said of him who was born from Mary, or of any other, in order that at the same time I may answer Photinus, is at present of no consequence, for I leave this con- test to you. This, however, is sufficient as a testimony, that John says he was with God, and in the beginning. How, therefore, do these things accord with what Moses says? But they accord, say they, with the words of Isaiah, “ Be- hold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son.” (Isaiah vii. 14.)
