Weird Tales, Vol. II, No. 1

· July–August 1923

This July-August 1923 issue of Weird Tales contains thirteen short stories and two novelettes across its 87 pages. The lead feature is Francis Stevens's "The Outcasts," describing five American adventurers—naturalist Bryce Otway, correspondent Waring, yacht-owner Sigsbee, steward John B., and aesthete Tellifer—who discover a massive flame-colored pyramid on a remote Brazilian island. The structure, built in eight tiers with bas-relief carvings depicting sun-worshippers and writhing centipede-like creatures, shows recent habitation. The explorers find a mysterious collection of abandoned boats and a modern hydroplane at the pyramid's base, suggesting previous expeditions from which no one has returned. Other contents include George Warberton Lewis's "The Outcasts," B.W. Slinky's "The Room of the Black Velvet Drapes," and stories by Valma Clark, John Harris Borland, Isabel Walker, Bryan Irvine, and others exploring supernatural and adventure themes.
