The Argosy, Vol. 51

· January 1891

This issue of The Argosy carries no painted cover — only dignified letterpress typography announcing the magazine's title, date, and lead story, "The Silent Chimes." That restraint marks the era: Frank Munsey's Argosy (founded 1882) had not yet adopted the lurid illustrated covers that would define pulp culture. Printed on cheap wood-pulp paper and sold for a dime, it was nonetheless the vessel that launched the pulp revolution. By packaging serialized fiction — adventure, romance, mystery — for a mass working-class readership, Argosy created the commercial template that later titles would amplify with gaudy painted covers and genre specialization, seeding directly the story-types the comic book would inherit a half-century later.
