This is an interior text page, not a cover — a clean Victorian typeface opens Chapter XXII of Winifred Power, a serialized novel, beneath the masthead THE ARGOSY and the date August, 1883. No illustrated cover survives in this scan. Frank Leslie's The Argosy, founded 1882 in the United States (distinct from the older British periodical), was among the earliest all-fiction magazines printed on cheap wood-pulp paper — the direct ancestor of the pulp era. Its formula of serialized adventure, romance, and sensation fiction at low price points established the commercial template that later magazines such as All-Story and Weird Tales refined into the full-blown pulp genre machine the comic book would inherit.
