The Argosy, Vol. 22

· December 1876

This issue of Argosy (December 1876, Vol. XXII) contains Chapter XXXIV of "Edina," a serial novel by Mrs. Henry Wood (author of East Lynne).

In this installment, the Raynor family faces financial hardship three years after leaving Eagles' Nest. Recent illness among the children and Mrs. Raynor has exhausted their meager savings and diminished Edina's piecework income. Alice loses her teaching position when her employer Mrs. Preen relocates to Devonshire. The family considers securing young Robert's admission to Christ's Hospital through a governor's presentation. Edina travels to Eagles' Nest to petition George Atkinson, now the estate's owner, whom she discovers is ill but receives her warmly. She requests his presentation to the school for Robert, but Atkinson declines, citing another needier candidate. Tension surfaces when Edina confronts him about his past treatment of the family.
