Chapter VII, "In the Moonlight," advances the inheritance dispute central to the plot. Anthony Castlemaine, staying at the Dolphin Inn, has written to his relatives in France requesting clarification of his claim to Greylands' Rest estate. He encounters the sympathetic Ethel Reene and, emboldened, seeks an interview with his uncle James Castlemaine, the estate's current master. Their confrontation in a field escalates when Anthony threatens legal action to compel disclosure of the property's title-deeds. The uncle, angered by his nephew's persistence and allusions to neighborhood gossip, loses his temper and nearly strikes Anthony before departing in fury. The coastguard superintendent witnesses the altercation. The chapter's final paragraph darkly foreshadows Anthony's impending death "in darkness and secret," suggesting imminent tragedy.
