# Within the Maze

This chapter from the December 2, 1872 issue features an installment of "Within the Maze," serialized by the author of East Lynne. Detective Tatton receives shocking news from Scotland Yard: the real Philip Salter—the mysterious figure he sought at Foxwood—has been dead in Canada all along, making his investigation fruitless. Tatton departs in frustration.

Sir Karl Andinnian's brother, Adam, whom everyone believed dead, has been living in secret at the Maze, gravely ill. As Adam's condition worsens and their infant child dies, Karl fears medical intervention. He ultimately confides Adam's true identity and illegal status to Mr. Moore, a surgeon, securing his silence by appealing to conscience rather than law. The revelation shocks Moore, who helped bury Sir Adam years earlier, prompting his incredulous response: "Did Sir Adam come to life again?"
