# Within the Maze

This is Chapter XXXII of Within the Maze, a serialized novel by the author of East Lynne, appearing in The Argonaut, November 1, 1872. The chapter shows how a mysterious illness at the Maze estate becomes known to Detective Mr. Strange. When Mrs. Grey's servant telegraphs for Dr. Cavendish, his arrival is witnessed by Mr. Moore, the local surgeon, who questions the doctor about the patient. The incident cascades when Miss Jemima Moore encounters Mr. Strange and innocently reveals details: a gentleman at the Maze is gravely ill, suggesting to Strange that the patient is Philip Salter, an escaped criminal. Strange pursues Dr. Cavendish to Basham, arrives past nine o'clock, and uses pleasant manners to extract information rather than revealing his authority, confirming the patient is indeed a gentleman at the Maze.
