The Argosy, Vol. XIV

· October 1, 1872

This is Chapter XXIX of Within the Maze, a serial novel by the author of East Lynne, appearing in the October 1, 1872 issue. The chapter, titled "Only a Night Owl," depicts Sir Adam Andinnian and his wife Rose at their estate, The Maze, living in fear as a London detective named Strange investigates fugitives in the area. Karl Andinnian visits to warn them that Strange believes an escaped prisoner named Salter is hidden at their property, not realizing Sir Adam—believed dead and entombed in the family vault—is actually concealed there. The couple discuss Adam's unexplained health troubles while monitoring for approaching danger. Karl warns Adam to exercise extreme caution and abandon his reckless evening dress habits. After Karl's departure, Adam experiences mysterious sharp pains while walking in the maze, of uncertain origin.
