The Shadow of Moloch Mountain

· c. 1870

What survives here is the back cover — plain navy cloth binding, no illustration, no typography visible — of a Victorian-era novel or story collection. The title, The Shadow of Moloch Mountain, points toward the sensation fiction that flourished in the 1860s–1870s: brooding landscapes, Gothic menace, the mountain as a figure of crushing, ancient power. This cloth-bound format preceded the wood-pulp revolution; when cheap pulp paper arrived in the 1880s–1890s, publishers abandoned such plain boards for lurid painted covers that shouted from the newsstand. That shift — binding to image, restraint to spectacle — is exactly the chain leading from Victorian sensation fiction through the dime novel and pulp magazine to the comic book cover. Artist unknown.
