The Shadow Garden (A Phantasy) and Other Plays

· 1910

This cloth-bound volume — its cover woven in shifting teal and blue-green, the fabric catching light like iridescent water — predates the pulp magazine era by a decade, yet belongs to the same current of popular literary culture that fed it. Published in 1910, it collects verse plays in the Symbolist mode, the 'phantasy' subtitle signaling the dreamy, otherworldly register that would soon electrify Weird Tales and the fantasy pulps. The wood-pulp magazines absorbed exactly this inheritance: the haunted garden, the shadow-world just behind the visible, the idea that genre fiction could carry genuine strangeness. No cover illustration here — the textile itself is the design, quiet and strange.
