Munsey's Magazine, August 1922

· August 1922

This issue contains Edgar Rice Burroughs's serial "The Girl from Hollywood," a modern drama set in Southern California. The plot involves two neighboring ranches and entangled romantic engagements: Custer Pennington is engaged to Grace Evans, who leaves for Hollywood to pursue acting; meanwhile, Eva Pennington and Guy Evans are also engaged. Guy becomes involved in illegal whisky smuggling orchestrated by discharged ranch hand Slick Allen. Actress Shannon Burke, professionally known as Gaza de Lure, has been addicted to morphine by actor-director Wilson Crumb, who also partners with Allen in the drug trade. The excerpt follows Shannon's internal struggle with her morphine addiction while staying at the hospitable Pennington ranch, where she battles the craving while trying to maintain her secret and enjoy moments of happiness away from her Hollywood existence.
