This is not a pulp magazine cover but a mid-nineteenth-century book binding — specifically the gilt-embossed cloth cover of Wanderings of a Pilgrim in the Shadow of Mont Blanc and the Jungfrau Alp (1847). The cover carries no illustrated scene or cover-line typography; instead it presents a densely tooled gold arabesque medallion centered on rose-washed fabric, framed by interlocking border patterns stamped in gilt, with a ribbed gold spine at left. Victorian decorative bookbinding of this kind — ornate, anonymous, purely ornamental — predates pulp culture by half a century and has no direct relationship to the wood-pulp magazine tradition this exhibition addresses.
