This is Volume IV of John Gorton's General Biographical Dictionary, a new edition published in 1851 by Henry G. Bohn. The volume contains alphabetically arranged biographical entries for historical figures from Wace through Wake. Entries include Robert Wace, a twelfth-century French poetical chronicler; John George Wachter, a German antiquary and linguist; Luke and Peter Wading, seventeenth-century Irish ecclesiastics; Charles Bern Wadstrom, a Swedish traveler who investigated the slave trade; Lionel Wafer, an English voyager and surgeon who lived among indigenous peoples on the Darien isthmus; and various other scholars, clerics, and public figures. The entries typically note birth and death dates, professional positions, major publications, and scholarly achievements. William Wake, Archbishop of Canterbury, receives extended treatment documenting his ecclesiastical career and theological writings.
