The Flight of the Shadow

· 1899

This volume's cloth-bound cover — deep slate-blue buckram, spare and unadorned — belongs to the pre-pulp moment just before wood-cheap paper and lurid painted imagery transformed popular fiction. Published in 1899, The Flight of the Shadow represents the late-Victorian yellowback and library-edition tradition from which the pulps would erupt within a decade. No illustrated scene competes for attention; the catalog call number and library stamp do the work instead. By 1910, publishers would abandon this restraint entirely, wrapping adventure and horror tales in oil-painted covers of desperate figures and unearthly menace — the visual language that fed directly into the first comic books of the late 1930s.
