Collier's Weekly, Fiction Number

· December 21, 1901

Collier's Weekly, Vol. 28, No. 12 (December 21, 1901). This Christmas issue features short fiction by Rudyard Kipling (illustrated in color by Howard Pyle), Richard Harding Davis (illustrated by F. D. Steele), Robert W. Chambers (illustrated by F. C. Yohn), and Frank R. Stockton (illustrated by A. I. Keller). A striking double-page color illustration by Frederic Remington titled "Caught in the Circle" drew such demand that proofs were offered separately for fifty cents. The editorial section contains opinion pieces on contemporary political matters: Richard Croker's retirement from Tammany Hall leadership, Andrew Carnegie's ten-million-dollar gift to educational and charitable institutions, Congressional debate over the Nicaragua Canal Treaty (ratified December 5), trust regulation and the Amalgamated Copper Company scandal, Mormon polygamy in Utah, British commercial rivalry with America, South American territorial disputes between Argentina and Chile, and press commentary on judicial decisions.
