The Cavalier, March 14, 1914

· March 14, 1914

A woman in a dark coat and wide-brimmed hat gazes upward against a golden sky, one hand raised to her head, the other gripping a sword hilt. The Cavalier, issued weekly at ten cents, advertised adventure fiction to mass audiences through painted covers of dramatic intensity. This issue featured "Aurora Borealis" by John Fleming Wilson, complete in one installment. Pulp magazines of the early twentieth century built their commercial success on lurid cover art and serialized stories spanning romance, adventure, and the fantastic—genres that would directly influence the comic book medium's visual language and narrative structures.
