Blue and Gray Weekly, No. 25

· January 27, 1905

This installment of Blue and Gray Weekly presents "Saddle and Sabre; or, The Boys in Blue's Hard Ride," a Civil War adventure by Lieut. Harry Lee. The narrative opens at General Grant's headquarters, where Colonel Chester Gordon proposes eliminating Confederate cavalry commander Forrest as an obstruction to Union advance. Grant advises Gordon to intercept Forrest at a vulnerable supply train near the Tallahatchie River, where the Confederate raider typically strikes. Grant assigns Captain Jack Clark of the Fairdale Blues infantry company, mounting them as cavalry scouts to serve under Gordon. Clark, a Northern academy graduate, has complicated ties to the South through his former friendship with Will Prentiss and romantic attachment to Prentiss's sister Nellie, relationships severed by the war.
