# Catalog Note

This issue features the serial "In the Trenches; or, The Boys in Blue Surrounded" by Lieutenant Harry Lee, a Civil War adventure centered on the Fairdale Blues, a New York company who have distinguished themselves at Bull Run and other Peninsula battles. The narrative follows Captain Jack Clark and First Lieutenant Hal Martin as General Grant assigns them a dangerous reconnaissance mission: to march toward Holly Springs and Oxford, burning bridges and obstructing Confederate cavalry under Nathan Bedford Forrest's command. En route, the Blues encounter Opeechuck, a Natchez scout mistreated by Confederate forces, who warns them of Forrest's approaching cavalry and agrees to guide them. The company camps safely after witnessing a large gray cavalry detachment pass nearby. The chapter concludes with Hal Martin presenting Jack a mysterious note, setting up further developments in the campaign.
