Beyond the "Dead-Line": Or, The Boys in Gray Besieged

By Lieut. Harry Lee, Blue and Gray Weekly, December 23, 1904

This Civil War serial follows Captain Will Prentiss of the Virginia Grays, an elite Richmond volunteer company, as they undertake a dangerous reconnaissance mission. General Magruder tasks them with delivering dispatches to General Stonewall Jackson, who is maneuvering to strike the Union left flank. The route requires penetrating McClellan's rear-guard—the "dead-line"—using stealth rather than cavalry. Climbing a tall tree, Prentiss scouts Union artillery positions and troop deployments across swamps and woodlands. After pushing forward cautiously, his men ambush a Union cavalry unit, defeating them with bayonet charge and driving the soldiers back in panic. However, exposure of the Confederate detachment behind Union lines now prompts organized pursuit. The narrative emphasizes rapid tactical decision-making and the resourcefulness of these youthful soldiers operating deep within enemy territory.
