# Catalog Description

Canebrake Mose; The Swamp Guide by Walter Norris McNEIL (New York: Beadle and Adams, 1877).

A maritime adventure serial opening with the merchant ship Ellinor under attack by the pirate vessel Ocean Scourge. Captain Vannier sails homeward with his beloved daughter Ellinor and her Irish maidservant Bridget after extended travels abroad. Weathered seaman Will Brande spots the pirate ship on the horizon; despite attempts to escape, the Ellinor is disabled by cannon fire. Captain Vannier is mortally wounded. Will Brande defends Ellinor but is beaten unconscious; both she and Bridget are captured by the pirates. The narrative establishes romantic and domestic elements alongside action, with comic relief provided by Bridget's Irish dialect and exclamations. The text combines sentimental Victorian prose with nautical adventure conventions typical of period pulp serials.
