Nick Doyle, the Gold-Hunter: A Tale of California by P. Hamilton Myers (Beadle and Adams, 1856) is a gold-rush adventure narrative centered on Frederick Innis, an impoverished young lawyer awaiting his break into fortune. Innis resolves to join the California gold rush after learning of discoveries there, but faces a legal obstacle: an unjust judgment of five hundred dollars is executed against his possessions on the eve of departure. His friend Whitman's appeal to the wealthy banker Twiggs—Fred's father's former benefactor—is coldly refused. Meanwhile, Twiggs's daughter Kitty harbors unspoken affection for Innis but maintains propriety. Facing financial ruin, Kitty contemplates her jewelry box, inherited from her grandmother and exclusively her own property, apparently considering how to aid the young lawyer without his knowledge.
