# Catalog Description

"Tippy, the Texan; or, The Young Champion" by George Gleason is a serial fiction installment set during the Mexican-American War's Siege of Monterey (September 1846). The narrative begins with American troops encamped at Walnut Springs preparing to assault the fortified city. Lieutenant Fuller and Major Pefferton, two officers, discuss a secret reconnaissance mission authorized by General Taylor. Pefferton reveals his true motivation: to locate and rescue Donna Francisca de Salamanca, a Spanish woman he glimpsed in Monterey three months prior and has loved from afar. He possesses her miniature portrait and a cedar sprig she left him as a sign of favor at a fandango, though a rival American suitor competed for her attention. Despite the danger, Fuller agrees to accompany Pefferton into the city that night to attempt her rescue before the siege begins.
