# Jack Harkaway in New York; or, The Adventures of the Travelers' Club

This installment of Bracebridge Hemyng's serialized adventure novel follows Jack Harkaway, an eighteen-year-old gentleman in London, and his servant Monday. After receiving a letter from Miss Lena Van Hoosen—a young New York heiress—Jack learns that Lord Maltravers has proposed to her and, rejected, has threatened to remove Jack from his path. At the Travelers' Club, a group of gentlemen discussing buffalo habitat locations votes to send an investigating committee to America, appointing Jack, Professor Isaac Mole, Captain Cannon, and Mr. Twinkle to report on the animal's location. Jack welcomes the opportunity to follow Miss Van Hoosen to New York. Meanwhile, Lord Maltravers plays a prank on sleeping Professor Mole, burning his nose with a lit paper. When Jack witnesses this and demands an apology, Maltravers refuses, leading to a physical confrontation between the two rivals.
