# Oregon Josh, the Wizard Rifle

This issue contains the opening serial installment of "Oregon Josh, the Wizard Rifle; or, The Young Trapper Champion" by Roger Starbuck. The narrative follows Oregon Josh, a middle-aged trapper and sharpshooter, and his seventeen-year-old companion George in the Oregon wilderness. An impoverished Indian alerts them to a planned attack by Okanagans against an incoming trading schooner. Josh and George race to warn the vessel, captained by Williams, which carries his fifteen-year-old niece Rose. After Josh departs in a canoe, George meets Rose onshore. When a local Indian named Shewie attempts to steal their boat, conflict escalates into a full ambush. George and Rose take shelter in a rock hollow as Okanagans seal them inside, trapping them with limited provisions while awaiting rescue.
