An Irish Sport Abroad: Pat Mulloney's Adventures

This serialized adventure by C. L. Edwards follows Roger Mayfield's rescue from Sioux captors by the frontier hunter Red-Feather and his portly companion Bogard. The action opens in 1844 near the Yellowstone headwaters, where Red-Feather and Bogard discover Mayfield pinioned to a tree. Using a dramatic stratagem—stampeding the Indians' horses through their camp—they free Mayfield, who kills a guard and retrieves his rifle. The captive reunites with Patrick Mulloney, an Irish servant from whom he'd been separated during a buffalo hunt gone wrong. The group flees into a ravine where a storm erupts with supernatural-seeming sounds. The chapter concludes as the Sioux locate them, opening combat. The tale combines frontier adventure, pursuit narrative, and Irish comic characterization through Mulloney's dialect speech and exclamations.
