This issue of Beadle and Adams Weekly contains the opening chapters of "Old Grizzly in the Rockies: Bruin Adams, the Boy Ranger" by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham. The narrative follows young Jimmy Adams (J.F.C. Adams), nephew of the famous hunter "Old Grizzly," who works as a mail-rider on a thirty-mile route through New York's forest country. Chapter I establishes Adams as a skilled horseman and marksman. Chapter II depicts his heroic defense against two mail robbers attempting to steal valuable letters—he shoots one dead and captures their horses. Chapter III introduces an itinerant preacher ("Parson Flemming") who proves to be a mail robber in disguise, striking Adams unconscious with a whip-handle and pursuing his escaped horse to steal the mail-bags. Adams survives and continues on foot toward his destination, soon encountering a wolf pack following him through the forest.
