Beadle's Pocket Library No. 4

· February 6, 1884

This issue of Beadle and Adams' dime novel features "The Double Daggers: Deadwood Dick's Defiance" by Edward L. Wheeler, the second installment in a Black Hills outlaw saga. The story follows notorious road-agent Deadwood Dick and the vigilante Regulators pursuing him. After Dick's band is routed in Big Lode Canyon by Dashing Dave's Regulators, Dick escapes and sends a defiant advertisement to the local Pioneer newspaper threatening revenge. The notice creates uproar in Deadwood mining camp, prompting vigilantes to post a thousand-dollar bounty. The narrative intercuts between Dave and his men's discussions at the Metropolitan saloon and scenes of Dick's hidden companions—a young woman named Leone and her companion Ben, a Black man—concealed in a canyon watching approaching horsemen. Tensions escalate as multiple forces converge in the Black Hills landscape.
