# Gold Dust Rock: The Whirlwind of the Mines (by G. Waldo Browne)
This Western adventure serial opens as the outlaw Red Bivens and his gang threaten miner Scott Marlot and his granddaughter Ora with a three-hour ultimatum to abandon their valuable claim near Driftwood. When Ora refuses, Bivens orders his men to hang the elderly Marlot until she submits. After his apparent death and Ora's departure, she disappears into the wilderness. The narrative then shifts to the arrival of "Velvet Hand, the Sport" (Fairy Wylde), a strikingly dressed stranger of unusual elegance in velvet clothing and patent-leather boots. He boards a stagecoach driven by "Snap" Bird, who recounts the Marlot tragedy while speculating whether Ora became a road-agent. The coach is then intercepted by the "White Riders"—masked bandits on white horses demanding the stage's valuables.
