# Kit, the Girl Captain: The Mad Sailor's Legacy

By Col. Prentiss Ingraham, this serial installment is set during the War of 1812 in Long Island Sound. Young Kittie Moore, known as the "Surf Queen" among local sailors for her rescues, encounters a deranged hermit known as the Mad Sailor—a shipwrecked victim obsessed with her mother, Grace Carroll, who once rejected him romantically. When the Mad Sailor attacks Kittie, naval Lieutenant Ivan Ringold intervenes on horseback, killing him in combat. Ringold, who knows Kittie's father, requests use of Kittie's small sailboat to reach Lighthouse Island that evening. Before departing, he retrieves a mysterious tin box hidden in the Mad Sailor's clothing. Kittie's twin sister Meta and mother welcome the charming but enigmatic officer. As Ringold sails away toward gathering storm clouds, Kittie watches with affection and foreboding.
