# "The Tigers of High Pine" by Wm. R. Eyster

This serialized frontier adventure follows Mark Dorland and his small family—wife Miriam and son Dane, aged ten—who flee eastward in two ox-wagons toward distant mines, seeking refuge from Malcolm Dane's vendetta over a past killing. The narrative opens as they camp by a river where they encounter Scarlet Bear, a grateful Indian brave whom Dorland once aided, who leaves his young granddaughter as surety before departing. That night, a drifter named Bill Blake arrives requesting food. Shortly after, raiders attack in a coordinated ambush, killing Mark, Miriam, their two colored drivers, and Blake in sustained gunfire. The assailants search the camp to ensure no survivors remain. Young Dane, hidden with the Indian girl during the massacre, witnesses the slaughter while half-conscious before fainting. He awakens alone to discover the horror wrought upon his family and camp.
