This issue of Beadle and Adams' dime novel (No. 956, 1897) contains "Buffalo Bill's Volunteer Vigilantes; or, The Mysterious Man in Blue" by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham. The narrative follows Buffalo Bill as guide to two Eastern newcomers—Allan Tremain, a Yale graduate turned schoolteacher, and Dr. Dallas Donohue—traveling to Silver Thread Settlement. Their journey begins when a mysterious stranger (revealed to be Buffalo Bill in disguise) offers safe passage. At a frontier saloon called the Last Chance, tension erupts when Circus Sam, a notorious bully and card-game strong-man known for killing men, confronts the tenderfeet for their card winnings. Allan Tremain strikes Sam, prompting the bravo to draw his revolver. Buffalo Bill intervenes, disarming and overpowering Sam despite appearing unarmed, forcing an apology at knifepoint. When Sam attempts to provoke another fight, gunplay erupts with multiple parties drawing weapons.
