# Catalog Note

"Doubly Disguised" by Dr. Wm. Mason Turner, serialized in Beadle and Adams' Dime Library (No. 917, May 20, 1896). A melodramatic mystery-adventure set in Pittsburgh, 1859. Two grimy miners, Launce Ringwood and Teddy, are coerced into mysterious night work by a mysterious "boss" to support their families. As they journey through darkening streets and across the Monongahela bridge, an unknown third party—also a miner—shadows their movements, suspecting villainy. The narrative shifts to the mansion of wealthy ex-iron merchant Richard Harley, where his daughter Grace receives an unwelcome visit from the handsome but sinister suitor Mr. Somerville. Grace's coldness toward Somerville contrasts sharply with her father's approval of the wealthy young man. The story interweaves working-class desperation with upper-class intrigue, implying concealed connections between these disparate worlds.
