# Maverick Mark: The Man from Nowhere

This issue features the opening of a serialized Western adventure by Jos. E. Badger Jr., titled "Maverick Mark; or, The Black Jaguar of Texas." The narrative begins with cousins Eugene Cannon and Eloise Thornton riding across a Texas ranch, discussing Eloise's preference for ranch life over city society. Their conversation is interrupted when a gaunt gray wolf emerges from the grass, prompting the pair to pursue it on horseback. During the chase, Eugene lassos the wolf, but the wounded animal attacks him viciously, threatening his life. Eloise shoots the wolf, saving Eugene from serious injury. Upon examination, they discover the wolf had been previously shot while attacking a colt and was driven mad by desperation, alleviating Eloise's guilt over killing it.
