Wonderful Revelation: A Romance of Splendid Shadow Work in New York High Life

This mystery novel by Jackson Knox (Old Hawk) opens with the discovery of a murder on Fifth Avenue. An English gentleman, Hon. H. Digby Severne-Hartlieth, visits his business associate Major Rorston at a fashionable bachelor apartment house and finds him dead on a lounge—shot through the heart. The body lies in morning dress, undisturbed with no visible weapon or struggle.

Inspector Byrnes assigns Detective Castlemaine to investigate. Through questioning the Irish janitor, Patsey O'Goolerhan, Castlemaine learns three visitors called that morning: an unknown young man around 8:30, followed by two separate veiled ladies—one short and one tall—around 9 and 9:30. The detective retrieves a small derringer hidden behind the lounge. The physician estimates death occurred within two hours, between approximately 10 and 11 o'clock. Castlemaine begins methodically tracking the mysterious visitors as suspects.
