# "The Deedham Sensation: Or, The Romance of the Barremore Resurrection"

This serial mystery by J. C. Cowdrick opens with Reverend Ruy Rodman, a thirty-year-old bachelor clergyman in the small city of Deedham, interrupted during sermon preparation by an urgent nighttime visitor. A soaked couple—Herold Keenan and a woman giving her name as Huldah Barremore—demand immediate marriage before catching a train. Rodman performs the hasty ceremony with his elderly deaf housekeeper Anastasia Budd as witness. After the couple departs into the storm, Budd shocks Rodman: he preached Huldah Barremore's funeral sermon that very afternoon. The woman just married bears the identical face and name of the deceased. Rodman initially dismisses this as mere coincidence, though his unease suggests darker complications ahead.
