# Catalog Note

Solemn Sal' Seraph by Jos. E. Badger, Jr., is a western serial appearing in this August 1888 issue of Beadle & Adams dime novel. In Chapter I, "Death at the Door," Cale Dipson, driven by hatred, stalks Allen Bryson with intent to murder outside the Headlight Saloon in the declining boom-town of Falcon City. As Dipson prepares to fire, a gaunt stranger with a metal-bound staff strikes his pistol, spoiling the shot. A brawl erupts; the stranger is thrown through the saloon door. Chapter II, "In Search of a Seraph," shows townsmen investigating, initially suspicious of the strange, bone-thin intervener who produces a tiny, unloaded .22 caliber revolver—unconvincing evidence he is the assassin. The mysterious stranger remains under protection of Bryson despite his odd manner and appearance.
