# Beadle's Dime Novels, Vol. 1, No. 513 (August 22, 1888)

This issue features the opening installment of "Grizzly George's Best Yank" by W.H. Manning, a western adventure serial. The narrative begins in the remote northern town of Powderhorn Mile, where aging scout and hunter Grizzly George discovers his eighteen-year-old daughter Eve has died by suicide. An anonymous letter reveals that Robert Kendall, a trusted family friend, seduced Eve and then abandoned her to marry the wealthy Norma Westerley. The distraught George resolves to murder Kendall at his wedding ceremony that evening, cleaning his rifle in preparation.

The second chapter introduces Texas Tartar, a fashionably dressed Eastern detective with long black hair, a visible revolver, and a reputation as "The Man with Nine Lives." Tartar arrives at the boatman Tim Purcell's dock seeking an evening row on Rifle Lake. Purcell warns him of a mysterious creature—possibly a swordfish—that has infested the lake for several months and terrified the local population away from night boating. The serial combines frontier revenge plotting with mysterious creature elements and detective intrigue.
