Beadle's Dime Library No. 510

· August 1, 1888

This issue of Beadle's (August 1, 1888) features "El Moro, the Corsair Commodore; or, The Lion of the Lagoon" by Col. Prentiss Ingraham, a romance set in the Gulf of Mexico eighty years prior. The serial opens in England where young midshipman Neil Morgan discovers two murder victims on a forest road, including his family's bitter enemy, Lord Ravenal. Despite Morgan's innocent explanation, huntsmen arrest him on suspicion. Chapter Two shifts to the tropics aboard a convict transport ship bound for American waters, carrying prisoners in a caged enclosure amidships. Among the convicts is Morgan himself, now serving a sentence for the murders he didn't commit. Aboard also travels Mrs. Ainsworth and her young daughter Gulnare with cousin Captain Austin Ainsworth, traveling to meet the family patriarch. Gulnare and her mother suspect Morgan's innocence from his appearance, while Austin reveals the backstory: Morgan's heroic naval rescues earned him a midshipman's commission before his arrest.
