The Waiting Wait at Git Thar by W.M. Keyster

This Western serial installment begins in a mining region where Major Sunshine, a bandit, collects "irregular percentages" from travelers on the trail between Cactus Fork and Git Thar. An Express Company has recently hired guards for treasure coaches following resistance from passengers.

A coach arrives at the Traveler's Rest in Cactus Fork carrying "Travelling Eli," a boisterous, crude prospector heading to Git Thar, and "On Deck Harry," a gentlemanly traveler with white hands and blue eyes. Harry defuses Eli's rowdy behavior. Also aboard is Miss Bang, the refined daughter of a ruined governor, traveling to Git Thar to investigate her father's losses. Harry and Miss Bang strike up a cordial acquaintance.

As their coach travels through evening shadows, it is halted by bandits—evidently Major Sunshine's men. Harry prepares weapons, but Miss Bang persuades him against resistance, citing the bandit's reputation for allowing unopposed coaches to pass unmolested. Eli apparently attempts escape and is violently stopped.
